about

When touring with Parliament-Funkadelic in the mid to late 1990s, Sa'd The Hourchild Ali was assigned by George Clinton to make sure a young Chuck Da Fonk, and a rag tag P-crew including OG Funkadelic bassist Billy Bass Nelson, and drummer Gabe Gonzalez made it from show to show, as Chuck was driving his SUV between tour dates, apart from the tour bus.

Sa'd's sermon on "Pain and Beauty" comes from this era, essentially his quotes were captured in an interview about the P-Funk road experience. This conversation resurfaced after his death as a tribute, via dedicated P-Funk video historian Bushtales (Pascal Cloodt).

The Hourchild's words here may have been about P-Funk, but accurately describe the evolution of the relationship between Sa'd and Chuck as they created FSQ in 2013 and the project developed over the course of 5 years before Sa'd passed on to another energy sphere. "You really have to learn how to get along with each other," Chuck says, "you're on the road, DJing big US festivals, navigating small European cities and foreign cultures - it's close quarters and it pushes you to grow together." As Sa'd says on the track, "You know we go through our things, I see your dirty feet, I see your dirty drawers, but we are one family. And everything we go through in life, is what it takes to give the audience a dynamic performance".

"When I think of our sets at the Voodoo Festival New Orleans, SXSW, Moonrise Festival or being in London, or Ibiza and our crazy travels, imperfections, arguments, and the love we shared through all these experiences, I can return to this track to relive those memories," Chuck says. "But I think anyone that's been on tour with a musical partner, can relate to the message".

The track will be on FSQ's next album "Nightlife Geography" which builds on the concepts of "Reprise Tonight" - it's a musical map of the group's most amazing nightclub moments in New York City, London, San Francisco, Miami and beyond. "Pain and Beauty" is just one of many reminiscing songs on the album that will take a listener back to very specific times and places.

Chuck Da Fonk and One Era worked diligently during the pandemic to refine "Pain and Beauty" to fit The Hourchild's amazing message of unity found through the creation and performance of music. Led by a three note sub frequency heavy bass line from Billy Bass Nelson and sinister Moog synths, this driving and dark funk track opens up at the end, and unfolds into an epic crescendo captained by Chas Bronz and his beautiful guitar solo.
